What on earth is "cafe society" Mr Ezekiel?

In the "Isle of Thanet Gazette, Friday, September 29, 2006", Page 2, Council "leader" Sandy Ezekiel is quoted as saying "...it is one of our mainstays in the Conservitive group to promote cafe society."

My question is this - what on earth is he dribbling about?

Naturally I googled the issue. (for non technical users it means I used powerfull search engines to dig up more facts).

I found this:

"Our politicians display a new form of aggression that relies on a gesticulation more usually associated with Roman cafe society..." from: guardian.co.uk

Not really very informative for a "mainstays in the Conservitive group". So I continued to read down the search results and soon found this:

The newspaper reported that the Tories had signed up to support the organisation Conservatives Against a Federal Europe (Cafe).

But a Tory spokeswoman told BBC News Online that the reports were simply "a storm in a teacup".
From: bbc.co.uk

Could Mr Ezekiel have confused "Conservatives Against a Federal Europe" with places you eat lunch?

It does seem so.

The article where the quote appears discusses the resignation of Cllr Jack Cohen who is quoted as saying that "...the leadership has lost it's way".

I'd say! It seems the "leadership" has no idea what it is talking about. I am no better enlightened.

Interestingly Cllr Kirby said: "I think this is a storm in a teacup."

This never ending supply of highly localised storms seems to be quite a problem for the Conservitive party.

So can any one please enlighten me as to this super secret "cafe society" which is a mainstay of the Conservitive group that no one has ever heard of?

Or is Sandy Ezekiel just a total berk?

They probably think such

They probably think such voters will be alive longer.

Using quotes from wikipedia

In the late 1950s the term "Jet Set" began to take the place of "café society", but "café society" may still be used informally in some countries to describe people who habitually visit coffeehouses and give their parties in restaurants rather than at home.

(I don't see (m)any conservitives doing this.)

Café Society was also a New York City nightclub opened in 1938 in Greenwich Village by Barney Josephson... The club was the scene of numerous political events and fundraisers, often for left-wing causes, both during and after World War Two.

Is this, maybe, a secret confession by Sandy Ezekiel that he wants to be further to the left? Or maybe it is more about putting all the deck chairs out as the Titanic sinks...
